Drive

Huh. Two entries in three days.  I'm on a roll.

Mainly, though, I just had to ramble for a brief moment on the new FOX show Drive, co-created by Angel and Firefly producer Tim Minear, starring Nathan Fillion in a lead role. The two-part premiere last was night: episodes 1.1 - "The Starting Line" and 1.2 - "Partners".

Basically, the show is an action/drama about various people competing in an underground, illegal cross-country road race. I'll put my few thoughts under a cut, just to ease the reading for those not up to caring (you should be, though).

I think I read a description somewhere of the show feeling like "24-meets-Lost-meets-The Amazing Race", which after seeing these first two hours, is not an unfair assessment - and that's a good thing. Some critical reviews have been harsh, citing its premise as ridiculous and derivative, but I think they're missing out on the point - it's supposed to be a little bit out-there-over-the-top and fun.

The pacing from start to finish is pretty much balls-to-the-wall 'movement' - both figuratively and literally.  A bunch of characters are introduced in the first hour, with the potential for many others to be explored along the way.

But far and away, THE lead is Nathan Fillion, who is getting some front-and-center attention to showcase his chops and overall charisma.  I'll reiterate what's been said by myself and plenty of others elsewhere, that the man deserves to be a superstar.  He's in command of every scene in which he appears, and the character of Alex Tully has a few shades of the humor and humility of the beloved Malcom Reynolds character in his persona, so it's hard to not be fascinated - at least, for me.

The show (so far) has exploded into action with just the slightest bit of a "suspension of disbelief" requirement.  The set-up and action is a tad 'hyper-real', but not overtly so that it takes you out of the drama.  From the opening scenes, it becomes clear that this has the potential to be a really fun ride, so I'll enjoy it as long as it lasts.  Which, knowing FOX and its horrendous history of yanking promising shows, may not be that long.

Oh, and there's a couple of other Whedon-verse related items: the opening scene with Alex involves an investigator played by Richard Brooks - Jubal Early from Firefly (there's also a CSI investigator in the scene with "hands of blue" gloves, too); Alex's wife is played by Amy Acker - Fred from Angel - and I'm sure there could be a few others I've missed or may show up later.

Anyway, the show is definitely worth checking out.  The third new hour - episode 1.3 - "Let the Games Begin" - airs tonight, in its regular slot at 8PM on FOX, before 24 (where Prison Break was).  I'm hoping the fairly decent time slot yields adequate viewership to keep it going, since I cannot fault FOX's promotion on this one - they've been hyping it up pretty intensively for a couple of months now - online and all over their various network and cable stations.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for its future.

Kristen Bell is awesome.

I taped last night and intend to watch all three hours straight through later tonight. Nathan Fillion is totally mesmerizing so I am hoping for the best.

Great to see your two-cents though...already I trust your judgement in shows. Will be back with chatter after I watch. And what? No "Drive" thread over at the website? I am shocked!

LOL! Well, I did make a thread for it this morning in the 'Other TV' section HERE, but I just wasn't sure if there would be enough talk about it to warrant its own section. Granted, that may change shortly, though.

I'm curious to see what others think about the show, since some critics seem hasty to pan it. I really got a kick out of it, but I know I'm biased by Nathan's awesomeness, so who knows. *shrug*

Nice icon. I have that on a shirt.

Um, when I click it says: "The topic or post you requested does not exist

Click Here to return to the Index"

Not that it matters - can't watch until tonight.

Well, no one does anymore since TPTB went batshit and closed down all the Firefly gear stores. BUt yes, we all do. :D I sense Doublemint Twin fun coming up in May.

I have a few from cafepress, but my official logo shirt I got from Hot Topic and was licenced. I also have this Serenity Buddha shirt that I snagged in a clearance sale from TFAW .

Yes, I don't leave home without my Serenity/FF swag. :D

Cindy (_cinjudes_) made the icon and I snagged it - credit goes to her for several of my userpics, since I'm art-challenged. And I, too, have a shirt with that logo. Plus a Firefly word-logo, and a couple more Serenity and Blue Sun-themed. I collect, as you can tell.

About the thread link... ummm... perhaps you need to be logged in to W-I to access that section? And that above link or THIS one may not do that for you directly. Only thing I can figure, since I can see it just fine. But like I said, I'll try to get a sub-section set up in the 'Other Shows' area when I get a chance.

Which is always plenty enough for me anyway...

WORF! Which is why he is my most favoritest person on the planet and when he is a huge star, we can saw, 'duh'.

I have to say I agree that I was entertained by the two hour premiere and am invested in Nathan's character already. Most of the others I wasn't overly impressed with, but we shall see as time passes. I found myself just wanting them to stay with Nathan though.

I do hope we get some smiles out of him. I know he is set up to be angry and on a mission - but Nathan is just so good at playing all sides and if this really is his big chance to be noticed, I kinda wish they were showing every wonderful thing he can do.

Enjoyable beginning. But no matter - I'd be a fan if it were complete crap, which it is not. Where Nathan goes, so goes my nation. ;D
