"Fanboys" - a fandom send-up on film

College football this weekend was both exciting and fucking frustrating all at once. It ended on a shitty note for those who bleed garnet and gold, so I'm not going into any further detail.

But I did want to make a fuss over the upcoming film Fanboys. I've heard about this upcoming Weinstein release for months - mainly because Kristen Bell is in it, so my ass will be in the theater no matter what. But it also looks to be a funny yet mildly endearing look at movie, TV, and comic nerds. IMDB has it listed as in post-production, with a pending 2007 release date, so the details are still vague. But I just found a basic discription from the director, Kyle Newman, at IESB, which I'll include under the cut along with two promo pics:

From IESB:
'"Fanboys is a comedy about friends, fans and delusions of grandeur. Fanboys takes place in the fall of 1998, a time when everything was pure and Star Wars ruled the world once again. We follow four life-long best friends who travel cross-country in an attempt to break into George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch. Their mission is to see Star Wars Episode I early when they discover one of the young men in their group is diagnosed with terminal cancer and will not live long enough to see the film in theaters the following May. This film expresses what it means to care about something so truly that you would do anything for it… what it means to be a fan. This is a film for the fans, made by the fans. " - Kyle Newman and Matthew Perniciaro

The page also has several promotional stills, like this one:

And no matter how short of a scene this may be, the be-all, end-all reason to see this film is right here:

Kristen Bell in the Leia bikini outfit? So fucking there. Plus, the film appeals to my own fandom obsessions, so it's got to be at least mildly entertaining.

Holy hotness, Batman. I'm there (and a nerd). I'd actually heard of this film in passing - there was an (untrue) rumor about Jorge Garcia playing 'Ain't It Cool News' scribe Harry Knowles (a bit of a hometown hero here). I'm sure we'll be a few of many fanboys and girls to turn up for this one. ;)

I'm just anxious to find out when the release date may be. I'm hoping it's early spring, to get a jump on the big blockbusters that start rolling out in May (of which there will be several next year).

I hadn't heard that de-bunked rumor about Jorge playing Harry from AICN - that would have been funny. Still looking forward to what other celebrity/fandom-related cameos do show up, though.
